Fiber Optic InternetNot everyone has access to a fiber optic Internet connection, but those that do may not even know if it is something that they are truly interested in.  The fact is that everyone should be Interested in a fiber optic Internet connection for one reason or another, but not enough of us know about the technology to the point that a general level of consumer interests exists.  This FAQ is designed to alleviate such gaps in our collective knowledge and hopefully explain to people just why fiber optic Internet connections should be so desirable for virtually anyone that goes online.

Question #1: Why is Fiber Optic Internet so Special?

Answer #1: Fiber optics form the basic foundation of the Internet, and are fundamentally different than the electrical wiring that most of us are better acquainted with.  Instead of using electricity to push signals through metal wiring, fiber optics are a flexible sort of glass-like substance that allows for the transmission of light.  Light is inherently cheaper than electricity, and a good medium for light transmission allows signals to travel hundreds of times further than metal allows electrical signals to travel.  In fact, electrical signals cause metal to heat up and signals to loose coherence in very short order.

Fiber optics on the other hand can transmit light measured in different color ranges at the same time with virtually no heat created from electrical friction.  In a practical sense, this lets data travel further, clearer, and at far lower costs.

Question #2: What Are Fiber Optics Anyways?

Answer #2: Fiber optics are essentially systems to transmit and receive signals via light.  Light is an excellent transmission choice as it can travel incredible distances without degrading, can be measured in multiple parts of the color spectrum and thus carry multiple measurable data points, and costs very little to create and measure.

Question #3: Why Are Fiber Optics So Desirable?

Answer #3: Fiber optics send more data greater distances and at a lower cost with greater accuracy than electrical wire based systems of any size.  This essentially translates out to vastly superior technology, but it is not as widely available to end users as it should be.

Question #4: Are Fiber Optic Internet Connections More Eco-Friendly?

Answer #4: Because fiber optic connections can send more data further with far less electrical cost, many consider them to be more eco-friendly than electricity sent over metal wires.  This is certainly a valid point, but so is the fact that electrical wires slowly degrade over time whereas fiber optics generally last longer and are typically far easier to recycle at the end of their lifecycle.

Question #5: Can I Get a Fiber Optic Internet Connection in My Area?

Answer #5: Not all areas are served by direct to the property fiber optic connections, but the trend is moving this way.  As metal wires are starting to show their limitations, fiber is the clear replacement for our aging infrastructure.

Question #6: How Much do Fiber Optic Internet Connections Cost?

Answer #6: Fiber optic Internet connections come in many different performance profiles ranging from the equivalent of mid-range DSL and/or cable broadband at the low end of the fiber optic Internet connection spectrum all the way up to speeds all the way up to speeds several times faster than the fastest of what the competition has to offer.  As a result you can generally expect prices to be in line or slightly better than what comparable service would cost, if it was available from the competition.  Of course, bundling can save a great deal of money as well and completely alter the value equation.

Question #7: How Fast Are Fiber Optic Internet Connections?

Answer #7: Fiber optic Internet connections are easily some of the fastest Internet connections on the planet.  In fact, as we have already covered, the backbone of the Internet is actually formed almost exclusively out of high-end fiber optic systems because of their value and performance.  There is simply no comparison between electric transmissions over metal wires and light sent through crystal clear fiber optic networking systems.

Question #8: What Are Fiber Optic Bundles?

Answer #8: Fiber optic bundles are where digital cable, Internet telephone (VoIP), and/or other services use the fiber optic connection as well.  Fiber optic has so much bandwidth to spare that these are not even going to cause the connection to feel strained.
